Geography Population Studies

SAMPLE SURVEY

• It involves the counting of a sample within a population which is believed to
be a representative of the whole population.

Briefly define the terms population distribution and population density [6]

Population distribution

• The way in which a people are spread over an area.
• This spread is uneven mainly because of factors which can be classified
under physical, socioeconomic and political.
• This usually requires a description
• On a map population distribution is shown by the use of a dot map

Population density

• The number of people per specified area, for example, population per km
squared.
• This will be a figure, for example, 78 people/km2.
Population density and distribution is represented on a map by the use of
choropleth maps and the way these maps are made should be known by an ‘A’
level Geography student.

The dot map

These are used to show population distribution
This is a map which uses dots to represent values.e.g. The distribution of items
within a geographic unit which can be a district, province, country or continent.
Considerations when drawing the map.
• Dot value- this low enough to avoid emptiness and high enough to avoid
many dots and merging
• Dot size-these must be uniform throughout and should conform to the scale
of the base map.
• Dot location-this should depict actual distribution, no dots should be placed
in areas such as mountains or lakes or swamps.

Note to the student

When responding to such a question please, involve yourself, you are the subject
doing it. So use the phrase ‘I will’

Method of construction

• I will obtain a large base map of the area in question and sub divide the
map into smaller units. • I will obtain the figures of the sub areas and a physical map of the areas
as this will help in the placement of dots.
• I Will then calculate the range of data as this will help in coming up with
the dot value.
• Where dots give fractions, I will round them off.
• I will then calculate the number of dots for each area. • I will trace the base map on plain paper noting areas such as mountains
and swamps so that I do not place the dots in areas which cannot be
inhabited.
• I will place the dots on the map avoiding the inhabitable (non-ecumene)
areas using pencil so that you can rub if the dots are placed in wrong
areas.
• I will complete my map by providing a key and a title.
