Panyaza Lesufi promises to allocate resources to protect critical water & electricity infrastructure in Gauteng

Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi said that resources will be allocated to protect critical water and electricity infrastructure, as the province continues to see a worrying scourge.

Parts of the Joburg CBD have been left in the dark for close to two weeks now after an underground fire on the M1 highway.

Investigations found that the blaze had been sparked by the theft of cables in underground tunnels along the route.

As residents of the inner city continue to bear the brunt of cable theft, Lesufi said that resources are being allocated to protect infrastructure.

Recently, City Power made a call to law enforcement to play an active role in dealing with the issue.

It is understood that it costs the city about R160 million annually for repairs. Lesufi said that the crisis is being addressed.

“Cable theft is very rife, so we are putting the resources to protect that.”

Meanwhile, City Power said that electricity has been restored to 85 percent of customers who have been battling a widespread power outage.
