The City of Cape Town is calling on residents to refrain from dumping objects into the city’s sewer network system.
The city says items like plastic, stones, and sand have led to blockages that have far-reaching consequences including the contamination of clean water sources.
The City of Cape Town Water and Sanitation Directorate says the removal of manhole covers is irresponsible and poses an environmental hazard and safety risk to the public.
According to the metropolitan municipality, sewer channels are often blocked shortly after being cleared.
Heideveld and Blue Downs have been identified as hotspots for blockages in the last four months.
The city is encouraging communities to adopt responsible waste dumping practices.
Its called on members of the public to report instances where people are tampering with manhole covers and dumping waste in the sewer network.
