A Durban police officer has testified that he helped alleged underworld crime boss, Nafiz Modack, intimidate an asset manager by arresting him on trumped-up charges.
This after State witness, Shanil Maharaj, claimed he asked Modack to retrieve R2 million from the asset manager, who can only be identified as “Mister C” following a botched investment.
The Durban officer, Calvin Shunmugan, who is a warrant officer in the K9 unit, told the court he regarded Modack as the Robin Hood of Cape Town.
Shunmugan said that he was put in contact with Modack via Anwar Gallie, whom he met in Durban via another associate.
He told the court he believed Gallie to be Modack’s right-hand man and was excited to meet him as he followed Gallie and Modack on social media.
Shunmugan told the court he heard Gallie, who he knew as Gustavo, refer to Modack as “Pablo” from the Netfix series Narcos.
The State told the court these references would later help them prove Modack was running a criminal enterprise.
Shunmugan testified that Modack phoned him directly to ask him to arrest Mister C in April 2020.
The trial continues.
