Police officers in court for stealing a car


Two police officers are being charged with the crime of stealing and selling another person’s motor vehicle after they were given the car for safekeeping.

Blessing Musonza, an officer with the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) stationed at Chitungwiza, along with colleagues Knowledge Chamakore and Shepherd Chikomo, recently appeared before the Harare Magistrates’ Court. They are facing charges related to the theft of a motor vehicle they were trusted with for safekeeping.

Details of the incident that led to the police officers’ arrest

In June 2023, the complainant, who is also a police officer, parked his white Honda Fit at ZRP Chitungwiza for safekeeping. He confirmed that the vehicle was secure as of January 31, 2024.

According to the State, in February 2024, the first accused, Blessing Musonza, allegedly drove the Honda Fit to the ZRP Chitungwiza boom gate and handed it over to the second accused, Knowledge Chamakore.

They subsequently sold the car to a third party, providing a counterfeit registration book. The unsuspecting third accused paid for the car and subsequently took it in his possession. The accused had bought the stolen vehicle for the purpose of turning it into a public taxi.

Discovery and Investigation Of The Theft

The theft came to light on February 9, 2024, when the complainant checked on his car and found it missing. A police report was filed, and investigations led to the recovery of the vehicle on May 21, 2024. The car was being used as an unlicensed taxi.

Arrests and Legal Proceedings

Following the recovery, the third accused was arrested and implicated Musonza and Chamakore. All three suspects were taken into custody. They are scheduled to appear in court again on June 19, 2024.
