The South African Police Service (SAPS) has cleared a Zimbabwean man for the callous Sasko murders in Cape Town.
The incident gained notoriety through a viral social media video.
The Incident That Brought Mzansi To Tears
On 16 May 2024, three Sasko delivery workers in Delft, Cape Town, were ambushed by gunmen while conducting their rounds in a white Isuzu bread truck marked with the Sasko logo. Despite complying with the robbers’ demands and surrendering their money, two of the workers were killed, and the third was critically injured.
The assailants fled the scene with cell phones and an undisclosed amount of cash. Emergency service providers ferried the injured employee to the hospital for medical care.
Yesterday, an email screenshot went viral online, suggesting that a tip-off had implicated a Zimbabwean individual in the double Sasko homicide. The same individual, Martin Mungayi, was also allegedly linked to other robbery incidents.
He was reportedly arrested while on a bus bound for Zimbabwe. The email alleging that the “Zimbabwean robber” had been apprehended elicited fury online.
Some South Africans started calling for Zimbabweans staying in South Africa illegally to leave.

South African Police Clear Zimbabwean Man For Alleged Involvement In The Sasko Murders
The Police have since clarified that the man they arrested was not involved in the Sasko murders. He was recently detained in Beaufort-West for lacking proper documentation.
Police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Malcolm Pojie said the 28-year-old Zimbabwean man apprehended on 22 May is not connected to the murders that took place last week in Delft:
“Be advised that a 28-year-old Zimbabwean national was arrested in Beaufort-West yesterday, 22 May 2024, as an undocumented person. However, he is not a suspect in the Delft double murder of a week ago.”
