The National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) said that it would implement a new payment system for beneficiaries that would take effect in September.
This after the NSFAS filed papers with the court to terminate contracts with the current direct payment service providers.
The scheme’s newly appointed administrator, Freeman Nomvalo, gave an update on progress in the organization since it was placed under administration last month.
Nomvalo has assured beneficiaries that the changes taking place would not affect the payment of student allowances.
He said the NSFAS was in agreement with universities and colleges to pay student allowances directly from the institution until the end of July.
“We are in conversations with universities so that the process continues smoothly and to the extent possible to avoid further challenges to the 2024 financial year,” Nomvalo said.
Nomvalo said this was part of the plan to implement the Werksman report that suggested the termination of the contracts.
He said the NSFAS, in collaboration with the Special Investigating Unit (SIU), is also carrying out disciplinary processes against some employees within the funding scheme.
Nomvalo said he could not provide more details on the process as it was currently a legal matter.
