The IEC in Limpopo has concluded the capturing of the election results. Over 1.4 million registered voters have participated in this year’s elections in the province. The African National Congress (ANC) got 73.4% support which is a decline of two percentage points compared to 2019.
The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) is second with 14.1%, a slight decline of zero-point-four of a percent compared to 2019.
The Democratic Alliance (DA) received 5.9% – a slight increase of point four of a percent. Freedom Front Plus follows them with 1% and Umkhonto weSizwe (MK) Party with point eight of a percent.
2024 Elections | ANC cruising in Limpopo:An independent candidate has expressed concern at the deposit charged by the electoral commission, IEC, to contest in the general elections. An independent candidate who did not perform well, Faith Phathela, says the commission should stop charging high amounts for independent candidates to contest.
An independent candidate had to pay a deposit of R20 000 to contest for a seat in the national assembly and R15 000 for a seat in the provincial legislature.
Phathela received 272 votes in Limpopo. It was the first time that independents contested an election. Phathela says the playing field is not level.
Coalitions
Another Independent Candidate in Limpopo, Lovemore Ndou says the country is not ready for a coalition government. He was speaking to the SABC on the sidelines of the vote capturing process in Limpopo at the results operations centre.
Ndou says he is seriously concerned about the future of the country.
“For a coalition to work parties need to agate the same philosophies, the same policies and ideologies. And what we’ve seen recently in places like Ekurhuleni, KwaZulu-Natal and Tshwane, it’s a broader reflection of challenges within a coalition government. And that’s only happening on a local government level, imagine what will happen on a national level. So we might end up with a situation where the country becomes ungovernable. So I’m a bit concerned about where this country is headed at the moment.
