Building an Icon: Dombeya

Dombeya is an iconic architectural landmark in Brits, South Africa, that was created by the artist Alexis Preller in the mid-1950s. A compound of structures inspired by a variety of African architectural traditions, the masterpiece is a vaulted brick structure intended to be a gallery to showcase the collection of Preller’s deceased friend, architect Norman Eaton.
