Good News for Zimbabwe’s English Teachers as Govt Negotiates With South Korea

In a move set to bring smiles to teachers’ faces, the government has initiated negotiations with South Korea to open up new job opportunities for Zimbabwean English teachers.

Zimbabwe is seeking to have its status as an English-speaking country officially recognized by the South Korean government, paving the way for local teachers to find employment in the prosperous Asian nation.

During a signing ceremony for an Air Services Agreement, Foreign Affairs and International Trade Minister Dr. Fredrick Shava revealed Zimbabwe’s proposal to the South Korean counterpart, Mr. Cho Tae-Yul. Minister Shava emphasized that English is an official language in Zimbabwe and the primary medium of instruction at all educational levels, making Zimbabwean teachers well-suited for teaching the language in South Korea.

“English is an official language in Zimbabwe and the sole medium of instruction at all levels of education,” he said.

If the bilateral negotiations are successful, Zimbabwe stands to gain from the remittances sent back by Zimbabweans employed as teachers in South Korea.

Previous Success with Rwanda

Zimbabwe has already seen success with a similar arrangement in Rwanda. In 2021, Zimbabwe and Rwanda signed a Memorandum of Understanding that led to the deployment of 208 Zimbabwean teachers to Rwanda in 2022. These teachers arrived on October 19, 2022, and have been instrumental in training and transferring knowledge and skills to Rwandan teachers and learners..
