The South African Institute for Drug-Free Sport Amendment Bill, which Ramaphosa signed into law, effects a number of amendments that align South Africa with the World Anti-Doping Code of 2021.
The non-compliance posed a threat to South Africa’s ability to hoist its flag at international sporting events.
This weekend, President Cyril Ramaphosa signed legislation into law that guarantees the South African Institute for Drug-Free Sport (SAIDS) adheres to the World Anti-Doping Code.
The code ensures that anti-doping policies, rules, and regulations are consistent with those of sport organizations and public authorities in the vicinity.
Noncompliance with the code resulted in the inability to hoist the national flag.
The South African Institute for Drug-Free Sport (SAIDS) would be constituted as a public entity under the Department of Sport, Arts and Culture. It is defined as the national anti-doping organization in the amended legislation.
The agency will prevent the use of prohibited substances in the South African and international sporting environment that are in violation of the principles of fair play.
