Politicians and NGOs offer deepest sympathies to Eastern Cape flood victims

Condolences are still pouring in from political parties, the president as well as non-governmental organizations for the victims of the Eastern Cape floods.

Seven people have been killed and thousands stranded after heavy downpours battered the province.

Humanitarian aid group Gift of the Givers is assisting those affected.

Authorities in the Eastern Cape are on high alert and are providing the necessary assistance to the thousands of people affected by inclement weather in parts of Gqeberha and large parts of Kariega.

Some people have been evacuated to community halls, but some were reluctant to leave their homes.

Technicians are currently on site assessing and attending sub-station faults.

Meanwhile, the Democratic Alliance has called on the provincial government to declare a state of emergency in the province.

“A state of disaster must be declared, and we must release resources to assist those people that have been displaced and those that are at risk. People have died and many more have been injured. We need to take decisive action,” said spokesperson Andrew Whitfield.

President Cyril Ramaphosa has also added his voice pleading with citizens to help people with limited resources in their communities.
