Harare Fraudster Fined for Faking Fictitious Daughter’s Death to Scam Ecosure
In a shocking case of insurance fraud, a Harare man has been slapped with a fine for defrauding EcoSure.
Sylvester Rusere, 36, of Hopely, made up a fictitious daughter and then faked her death in a bid to cash in on funeral benefits.
Details of the Scheme
According to court documents seen by New Zimbabwe, Rusere registered for Ecosure Funeral cover and listed his daughter, along with another made-up daughter whom he named Mufaro Rusere as a dependents.
Between March and April 2024, the accused falsely claimed that his fictitious daughter, Mufaro Rusere, had died in March 2024 at Mukutukutu Village, Chief Nyashanhu, Buhera.
Rusere went to elaborate lengths to substantiate his fraudulent claims by fraudulently fabricating a death certificate for Mufaro Rusere. He also fraudulently completed all necessary forms, which were supposed to be signed by the village head
Fraudulent Scheme Uncovered
Rusere also convinced witnesses to corroborate his story and obtained copies of their national identity cards.
He proceeded to the Econet shop in Masvingo, where he submitted the counterfeit death certificate and the other documents for processing the fraudulent claim.
He filled out EcoSure funeral cover claim forms, attached the fake death certificate and national identity cards of the witnesses, and forged their signatures.
However, the insurance provider was not fooled. Ecosure immediately launched a preliminary investigation to confirm the validity of the claim and discovered that the accused, Rusere, did not have a daughter named Mufaro. This discovery ultimately led to Rusere’s arrest.
Legal Action
He was found guilty of fraud after pleading guilty to the allegations. For his deceitful actions, Rusere was fined US$400 by a Masvingo magistrate.
He was also handed a three-month suspended sentence, with the magistrate warning that he faced six months in jail if he failed to pay the fine.

Previous Attempted Fraud Case Echoes Recent Ecosure Scandal
This is not the first time an individual has attempted to defraud Ecosure. In 2022, another man from Longfield, Headlands tried to defraud EcoSure by pretending his daughter had died
Esau Chara, aged 50, admitted guilt and was convicted of attempting to defraud EcoSure of $150,000.
Chara luckily escaped serving time in jail after two months were suspended on the condition of good behavior.
Additionally, the court suspended the remaining four months, mandating Chara to perform 140 hours of community service at Nehumba Primary School.
