Gift of the Givers inundated with calls for help amid inclement weather conditions

Gift of the Givers says it’s been inundated with calls for help amidst inclement weather conditions.

Heavy rains and damaging winds have been lashing parts of the country since last weekend, with snow reported in Northern Cape and Free State.

Five deaths have been reported in Tongaat, Kwazulu-Natal, following a tornado, while at least ten people have died in the weather-related incidents in Nelson Mandela Bay and Buffalo City in Eastern Cape.

In the Western Cape, scores of communities – including Khayelitsha, Kraaifontein, Hout Bay, Dunoon and New Village in Nomzamo, Strand – have been hit hard by heavy rains.

“The calls have been pouring in since early Wednesday morning when many of the informal settlements in the Cape Metropole reached out for our urgent assistance,” said the humanitarian aid organisation’s Ali Sablay.

“Many homes have been flooded with the severe rain coming down. Our teams immediately responded to the informal settlement of Nomzamo, Lwandle, where they assisted close to 4,000 people.”
