Harare’s health services department has also sprung up to speak on the flu bug and taken action to combat its spread.

It has set up emergency clinics across the capital to treat and test individuals suspected of having the influenza virus. This action comes as the Ministry of Health and Child Care reported 3,956 suspected influenza cases this week, with no deaths.

The Ministry highlighted that the highest number of suspected cases were in Mashonaland East (1,118) and Mashonaland Central (1,114). To date, there have been 91,439 influenza cases reported with no associated deaths.

The surge in flu-like illnesses prompted a warning from City Health Services Director Prosper Chonzi, who urged residents to seek medical attention if they experience symptoms. Dr. Chonzi emphasised that cases have been reported throughout Harare and stressed the importance of prompt medical care to prevent complications and hospitalisations.

He told H-Metro:

“We are urging residents to seek medical attention immediately if they experience any flu-like symptoms. These symptoms include fever, cough, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, body aches, and fatigue.”

Dr Chonzi noted that the winter season is contributing to the spread of the influenza virus and advised preventative measures such as frequent handwashing, covering coughs and sneezes, and avoiding close contact with sick individuals.

The government stated that the rise in flu-like illnesses across Zimbabwe is due to the common cold associated with winter. Investigations confirmed that this is not a new or exotic virus, and people are advised to take routine precautions and maintain a healthy lifestyle.

Secretary for Health and Child Care, Dr Aspect Maunganidze, reassured the public that no cases of Covid-19 or new viruses had been reported.
