Homeless Man Found Dead From Cold Weather In The Kwekwe CBD

A homeless Kwekwe man has been found dead from cold weather in the mining town’s central business district (CBD).

Passersby found the man yesterday morning. The homeless man is yet to be identified.

Last week, the Meteorological Services Department (MSD) warned that Zimbabwe would experience extremely cold weather that would persist until Wednesday, 12 June 2024.

The maximum temperatures across the country have been hovering around 20°C, with the minimum plunging to a frosty 3°C.

In Kwekwe, the temperatures fell to a numbing 5°C on Sunday night, getting into Monday. These temperatures are particularly adverse for homeless people with no roof over their heads or warm clothes and blankets to keep them warm through the night.

On Sunday, one homeless man wore a thin jacket as he had nothing else to shield him from the brutal cold. With no blankets to comfort him through the piercingly windy night, he got himself a few sacks to wrap around his body.

However, the cold weather tore through the sacks and ravaged his body until it gave up. The chilly conditions killed him at night.

Kwekwe residents and vendors in the CBD who know him noticed something unusual about how he was lying. They inched closer to him, only to realise he had frozen to death.

Pictures circulating on social media show him lying lifeless, with his right hand outstretched numbly. Also, the morning sunshine seeped into him; it was too little too late as the cold had snatched away his life in the thick of the night.
