Man commits suicide in airport toilet

New details have been shared on the incident of a man who committed suicide in a JM Nkomo Airport toilet while waiting for his flight.

A tragic event unfolded at the Joshua Mqabuko Nkomo International Airport on Thursday evening, involving a passenger who had checked in for a flight to Johannesburg. The individual, later identified as Cecil Themba Elisha, ended his life in the airport’s male restroom.

Details of the Incident

According to an eyewitness who was on the same FastJet flight FN8663 to South Africa, the man had been assigned seat 15A. “He arrived at the airport and completed the check-in process. Then, inexplicably, he proceeded to the men’s restroom and hanged himself using a rope,” the passenger recounted.

Law enforcement recovered a diary filled with what appeared to be numerous suicide notes, suggesting the young man had been facing significant personal struggles.

Airport authorities have refrained from commenting on the incident. When approached, Airports Company of Zimbabwe CEO Tawanda Gusha directed inquiries to Assistant Inspector Patience Ndlovu, who also declined to provide a statement. Bulawayo police spokesperson Abednico Ncube mentioned he was not aware of the incident at the time and requested more time to gather information.

Investigation and Reactions

Further details emerged that Elisha had used a door hinge to hang himself, a method that stunned airport staff due to its seemingly improbable nature. “It’s hard to believe because using a door to commit suicide seems almost impossible. He must have put a lot of effort into it. Sometimes, it’s just fate,” one worker commented.

Elisha, a 27-year-old from the Killarney suburb in Bulawayo, had completed all necessary travel procedures for the 5:30 PM flight to Johannesburg. His prolonged absence after visiting the restroom delayed the flight, prompting aviation security to search for him. They found him hanging from the back of the international departure restroom door using a nylon rope attached to a hinge.

The council and citizens extend their deepest condolences over the passing of a leader, businessman, and public figure who served with dedication and faithfulness,” Coltart stated.
