Zimbabwe Set to Launch Pioneering Floating Solar Panels at Kariba Dam, Transforming the Nation’s Energy Landscape
In a groundbreaking move to tackle energy shortages, Zimbabwe has announced plans to install its first floating solar panels on the Kariba Dam.
This ambitious project is expected to commence early next year, marking a significant step in the nation’s pursuit of sustainable energy solutions.

Initial Phase: 150 Megawatts on Kariba Dam
According to Bloomberg, Gloria Magombo, Secretary for Energy and Power Development, revealed the details of the project during a recent press briefing in Harare.
“An initial 150 megawatts of solar on the surface of the Kariba Dam will be the start of the project,” Magombo stated.
This innovative approach aims to harness solar power on the world’s largest man-made freshwater reservoir, which straddles the border between Zimbabwe and Zambia.
Private Sector Interest and Expansion Plans
The private sector has shown considerable interest, with applications to install up to 600 megawatts of floating solar panels.
While Magombo did not provide specific details, she emphasized the government’s commitment to expanding the use of this technology.
“We have seen a steady interest from the private sector for more projects,” she noted.
Addressing Power Shortages Amid Low Water Levels
The move comes in response to ongoing power shortages exacerbated by lower water levels at Kariba. The Zambezi River Authority has had to reduce water allocation for power generation due to a prolonged drought.
This reduction has led to frequent power cuts, prompting the government to explore alternative energy technologies to boost capacity.

Future Projects: Expanding to Mutirikwi Dam
In addition to the Kariba Dam project, the government plans to install floating solar panels at the Mutirikwi Dam. This expansion highlights Zimbabwe’s strategic efforts to diversify its energy sources and reduce reliance on traditional hydroelectric power, which has become increasingly unreliable due to fluctuating water levels
