Despite joining the Government of National Unity (GNU) the Freedom Front Plus (FF PLUS) said that it won’t renege on its position that Parliament should reconsider a Section 89 impeachment report into possible impropriety by President Cyril Ramaphosa.
Since the African National Congress (ANC) lost its parliamentary majority in last month’s polls, FF Plus leader Pieter Groenewald made it clear that the Phala Phala matter must be revived by the seventh administration.
Last week, the Economic Freedom Fighters(EFF) also told the house it wants the matter to be reopened after the ANC dismissed the independent legal report in December 2022.
The report suggests Ramaphosa has a case to answer in the theft of US dollars from his Phala Phala in Limpopo in 2020.
But its strategy head MP Wouter Wessels said that the party will still insist on accountability.
“When it was in front of Parliament it was voted down and there was no consideration of that report. So we still believe that accountability and giving effect to that constitutional principle of accountability should take effect and we believe that Parliament should play that role.”
