Nigeria has declared a health emergency due to a cholera outbreak affecting 31 states, with 1,528 suspected cases and 53 deaths reported as of June 24. To address the crisis, NCDC Director General also activated the National Cholera Multi-Sectoral Emergency Operations Centre (EOC). Speaking to journalists in Abuja, the Director General emphasized the high risk of the disease’s transmission and the urgent need for coordinated action. He revealed that the result of a risk assessment necessitated that the centre places the country on high-risk. He also stated that the NCDC will work with state authorities to identify and stem the spread of the disease, by providing enhanced surveillance and facilitating rapid communication and resource deployment.
