BREAKING: Former Warriors Star Norman Maroto Has Died


Former Dynamos and Zimbabwe Warriors star Norman Maroto has died after a short illness.

He was 40.

The former striker died in the early hours of Friday, 28 June 2024.

His friends said Maroto had been admitted to Harare hospital and he complained of flu symptoms. This was days after attending a funeral last weekend.

Maroto’s condition deteriorated so much that when he was taken to a private hospital in Harare, he was put on life support.

Maroto was a the Communications Manager of the Footballers Union of Zimbabwe (FUZ) at the time of his death.

The FUZ confirmed his death:

“FUZ would like to notify friends and all football stakeholders of the untimely passing of our Communications Officer, Norman Maroto. Mourners are gathered at No. 2360 Tynwald South, Harare. More information will be shared in the near future.”

Norman Maroto had a notable football career in Zimbabwe, spanning several years. He began at Dynamos Football Club, rising through the junior ranks to join the senior team in 2001.

During his time at Dynamos, Maroto was part of the renowned “Kidznet” team under coach Moses Chunga. In 2005, he made a mid-season move to Buymore Football Club, seeking new challenges.

Maroto’s career took off when he joined Gunners Football Club, where he won a league title under coach Moses Chunga in 2009. He scored a crucial goal against his former team, Dynamos, in the title-deciding match. Maroto’s performances earned him a place in the Zimbabwe national team, making three appearances for the Warriors.

After his stint at Gunners, Maroto played for Motor Action Football Club and FC Platinum. He was known for his pace, skill, and goal-scoring ability, making him a fan favorite.

Maroto was the last footballer to score 20 goals in a PSL season.

After retiring from football, Maroto participated in the FIFA Legends training program in 2023, aimed at helping retired players transition to new careers.
