The dinner was to take place on Friday, 28 June 2024. US-based philanthropist Sikhululekile Bhoboza Sibanda, who founded the school Beacon Hill Primary in Plumtree, organised the gala dinner. The proceeds were to go towards building more classrooms and developing the school to go up to Grade 7.

According to a Facebook influencer privy to the incident, the event was scheduled to be held in a secure school venue from 6 pm to 10 pm. It was meant to be a ticket-only event and closed to the public.

However, the ZRP blocked and banned the event. In a letter to the Beacon Hill Primary School head, the Officer In Charge in Plumtree said:

“We support the idea of fundraising for school projects, but we object to the time the event is held. Our objection is premised on security reasons and other reasons that are of national interest. We, therefore, propose that the event be held during the day, any day between sunset and sunrise.”

The school has reportedly lost thousands of dollars from the ban. The Facebook influencer revealed:

“The school lost almost US$4000 in food, which they had bought and prepared for the attendees because of the trigger-happy Plumtree ZRP bosses. People who bought tickets now have to be refunded by the school and it now has to count its losses. It’s sad and painful for kids, parents and the school.”
