Passion Java Praised for Supporting Mike Chimombe in Court Amid US$7 Million Fraud

Zimbabweans have showered United States-based cleric Passion Java with praise for attending his friend Mike Chimombe’s trial in person.

Chimombe and Moses Mpofu appeared before the Harare Magistrates Court for day two of their bail hearing.

Chimombe and Mpofu Spend Another Night Behind Bars

Chimombe and Moses Mpofu appeared before the Harare Magistrates Court for the second day of their bail hearing. The two are accused of defrauding the government of over US$7 million in a failed Presidential Goat Scheme. They will spend another night in custody as their bail application process was deferred to Tuesday. Chimombe and Mpofu already spent the weekend in remand prison after their bail ruling was postponed to Monday.

Chimombe and Mpofu appeared at the Harare Magistrates Court on Monday, but their matter was deferred to Tuesday for the continuation of their bail application.

Court Proceedings

The state called the investigating officer from the Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission, who submitted that Chimombe and Mpofu were not good candidates for bail. It emerged that the two have valid Chinese visas, and if granted bail, they are likely to abscond trial.ZACC officer Henry Chapwanya explained,

“The accused are a flight risk, they are men of means who can at any given time…if they escape through borders they can sustain their livelihoods.”

Chapwanya also said Mpofu gave a suspicious address, where an unfinished house with no doors or windows was found, and only a gardener stayed in the garage.

“We went to the house and found an unfinished house. It has no doors and windows and doesn’t look like anyone stays there. We went around the house and it shows no one stays there,” he said.
