A Kenyan court has deemed the 2022 shooting of Pakistani journalist Arshad Sharif by Nairobi police both unlawful and unconstitutional. Judge Stella Mutuku criticized the attorney general and director of public prosecutions for their inadequate investigation into the incident, where police fired on Sharif’s car at a checkpoint.
Sharif’s family alleges his death was an intentional act by an elite police unit. The journalist had fled Pakistan to avoid arrest for criticizing national institutions. Pakistani investigators later suggested his death was a “planned assassination,” noting the fatal shot came from inside or near the car.
The court ordered Kenyan authorities to conclude their investigation and mandated a 10 million Kenyan shillings ($78,000) compensation for Sharif’s family. Dudley Ochiel, representing Sharif’s widow, hailed the ruling as a “huge victory” for Sharif’s supporters globally, and anticipates charges against the officers involved. Despite ongoing investigations, no arrests have been made yet.
