The driver involved in Wednesday’s deadly accident involving a scholar transport vehicle in Carletonville is under 24-hour police guard in a hospital.
The man was behind the wheel of a bakkie when it rammed into the minibus taxi, killing 11 pupils.
The driver of the scholar transport vehicle was also killed.
Relatives of the schoolchildren demanded clarity on the surviving driver when they met to identify their loved ones at a community hall on Friday.
Although the identification of the victims was the priority for families gathered in this community hall, questions around the identity of the driver of the Ford Ranger bakkie soon followed.
The man is in a critical condition in hospital, under police guard, and is yet to provide a statement on what transpired on Wednesday.
The police’s Kgomotso Netshitangani: “The driver is still admitted, so he has not yet appeared in court. Yes, he is still under police guard.”
One family was able to identify their loved one through a photograph.
Others will now have to wait for DNA samples to be compared to the bodies of the victims.
