Tshwane’s Water Crisis: R450 Million Spent Annually on Water Tankers

Tshwane Municipality’s crumbling water infrastructure has forced it to spend approximately R450 million annually on water tankers. These tankers deliver clean water to communities lacking safe drinking water.

Over a year has passed since a cholera outbreak in the capital city claimed over 20 lives, highlighting Tshwane’s severe water issues. Municipalities in South Africa are constitutionally obligated to provide residents with clean, safe drinking water, but Tshwane’s situation remains dire.

The latest Blue Drop report reveals that only one out of eleven of Tshwane’s water sources is in good condition, with the others rated from average to very poor. Tshwane Mayor Cilliers Brink emphasized that water tankers are a temporary solution while the municipality addresses its infrastructure challenges.

“The City of Tshwane, like many other municipalities, overspends on water tankers due to broken or sabotaged systems that fail to deliver water directly to taps,” Brink explained. He assured residents that efforts are ongoing to ensure water tankers remain a contingency measure rather than a permanent solution.
