The City of Cape Town says it has given an extension until next week for the enforcement of an eviction order against homeless people living in the CBD.
The high court granted the City an eviction order and gave people until 30 July to vacate several areas. Over 150 homeless people have accepted the City’s offer of dignified transitional shelter at Safe Spaces so far, but others refuse to move.
The City says it will provide assistance for the voluntary relocations to Safe Spaces during next week. Cape Town Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis says a standing interdict is in place preventing further unlawful occupation of the areas.
“The extension is to provide for all of those who have agreed to move voluntarily so we will do that in an orderly process during the course of next week where they will all move voluntarily with the support of our team, take their personal belongings to the safe space. They will check in, they will be welcomed and they will meet up with their social worker and all of that.
