Algeria has withdrawn its ambassador from France in protest of France’s decision to recognize Morocco’s autonomy plan for Western Sahara. The Algerian Foreign Ministry announced this development on Tuesday, July 25, criticizing France’s support for what it called the “colonial reality” imposed on Western Sahara. The ministry condemned the decision as showing “great disdain and indifference,” accusing France of violating international legitimacy and the Sahrawi people’s right to self-determination. It also accused France of contradicting the UN’s efforts to decolonize Western Sahara, stating that the decision evades France’s responsibilities as a UN Security Council member. The dispute began on Tuesday when French President Emmanuel Macron recognized Morocco’s 2007 plan to offer Western Sahara autonomy under Moroccan sovereignty in a letter to Moroccan King Mohammed VI. Algeria will now be represented in France by a charge d’affaires.
