Guinea’s transitional authorities have presented a draft constitution that will reduce and set presidential term limits, potentially allowing the current military leader, Mamady Doumbouya, to run in the next presidential election. The junta, which took power in a 2021 coup, had initially proposed a two-year transition to elections but has shown little progress in organizing a vote. The new draft, which will be voted on in a referendum, aims to return the country to constitutional rule. It includes provisions for a five-year presidential term, renewable once, reducing the current six-year term. Former President Alpha Conde, overthrown nearly three years ago, will be excluded from future elections due to an age limit. The draft constitution does not prevent junta members from participating in elections. If approved, the new constitution could pave the way for stability.
