City Power continues clampdown on illegal electricity connections across Johannesburg

City Power said that it will continue with operations to get rid of illegal electricity connections across the metro.

On Friday the utility in collaboration with law enforcement conducted a cut-off operation in the Alexandra township.

City Power said that the township is one of the areas with many illegal connections that is putting strain on its systems.

Spokesperson Isaac Mangena said that the utility is not collecting revenue from the area due to illegal connections.

Mangena added that only 11% of residents in Alexandra are paying for electricity.

“You find that within the township itself, there are pockets of informal settlements that are basically contributing to the problems we have of capacity challenges”
