ANC Targets Revival of Grassroots Activism To Combat Electoral Decline

The African National Congress (ANC) is optimistic about reversing its trend of declining voter support, despite achieving only 40% of the vote in the recent general elections—the lowest in its history since 2009. The decline has prompted in-depth discussions during the National Executive Committee (NEC) meetings at the Birchwood Hotel in Kempton Park, focusing on a critical analysis of the party’s electoral performance.

Mdumiseni Ntuli, the ANC’s head of elections, pointed out a key issue affecting the party’s connection with voters. “There has been a noticeable reduction in activism within our ranks over time. While we have solid structures and leadership, there is a lack of active engagement linking these elements with the broader populace,” Ntuli explained. He emphasized the NEC’s commitment to rejuvenating this activism, reconnecting the party with local communities, and bridging the gap that has developed between the party’s structures and the electorate.
