Dr John Kani Honoured with Prestigious OBE for Services to Drama


Multi-award-winning actor, director, and playwright Dr John Kani was honoured with the Order of the British Empire (OBE) by King Charles in early August. This esteemed award, recognising his “services to drama,” acknowledges Dr Kani’s significant contributions to the arts both in South Africa and internationally.

The South African government extended its congratulations to Dr Kani, highlighting the global impact of his work. “Government and the people of South Africa celebrate this achievement with Dr Kani. His contributions have enriched South African culture and resonated with audiences worldwide,” stated the official release.

The Order of the British Empire is a prestigious UK honour, celebrating individuals for outstanding achievements and service in various fields, including the arts, sciences, and public service. Dr Kani’s OBE reflects his lifelong dedication to the arts and his commitment to cultural expression through drama.

British High Commissioner to South Africa, Antony Phillipson, shared on X: “It was my honour to present Dr John Kani with an honorary OBE awarded by HM King Charles for ‘services to drama.’ His work has inspired and united many around the world for decades. Dr Kani’s accolades include the Voices in Freedom Award, the Obie Award for Special Citations, the John F. Kennedy Medal, and the Golden Horn Lifetime Achievement Award. The South African government praised Dr Kani, stating, “This acknowledgement celebrates South African excellence on the global stage. Dr Kani’s career has shaped South African theatre and showcased our cultural heritage worldwide.
