DA Calls for Urgent Parliamentary Debate on Rising Electricity Costs

The Democratic Alliance (DA) is urging Parliament to convene an urgent debate on the rapidly escalating cost of electricity. This follows the National Energy Regulator of South Africa’s (NERSA) approval for Eskom to recoup R8 billion from consumers for the 2021/22 financial year.

Kevin Mileham of the DA highlights that this decision will result in a 4% increase for consumers, in addition to an anticipated 36.15% tariff hike Eskom is set to request for 2025. Mileham has formally written to Speaker Thoko Didiza, stressing the need for an immediate debate: “The recent announcement by the Department of Energy and Electricity to review the electricity pricing model is welcomed. However, the severity of the energy price crisis demands swift government action. Eskom’s inefficiency is now costing consumers.”

Simultaneously, Build One South Africa’s Gauteng MPL, Ayanda Allie, insists that Electricity and Energy Minister Kgosientsho Ramakgopa must urgently clarify details about the price review announced last week, including its start date, scope, and the personnel involved.
