KwaZulu-Natal police have made significant strides in their fight against crime, recovering over 300 illegal firearms in the past month alone. This major haul is part of ongoing efforts to combat the region’s high levels of violence, much of which is linked to illegal firearms.
During recent operations, officials confiscated a variety of weapons, including 260 pistols, 19 rifles, and 18 homemade firearms. Additionally, nearly 5,000 rounds of ammunition of various calibres were seized. The firearms were primarily recovered from suspects during arrests, with some found on individuals who were killed during confrontations.
Police spokesperson Robert Netshiunda highlighted the severity of the situation, noting that suspects armed with these illegal weapons have increasingly targeted police officers. The recovery of high-calibre firearms underscores the urgent need for continued vigilance and action against illegal weaponry in the province.
This proactive approach by KwaZulu-Natal police aims to enhance safety and address the persistent challenge of illegal firearms fuelling violence in the area.
