The KwaZulu-Natal Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (COGTA) is set to address rising service delivery concerns in Umdoni Local Municipality. Following a three-week blockade by residents demanding better services, MEC Thulasizwe Buthelezi has pledged to restore order along the province’s south coast.
In a recent address, Buthelezi highlighted severe issues, including persistent water shortages and uncollected rubbish. He noted allegations that some officials may be profiting from water tanker hires, a matter that will be investigated thoroughly. Additionally, municipal workers have been criticised for poor communication with residents regarding local issues.
The MEC expressed disappointment over the municipality’s failure to deliver essential services, stating that the department would soon implement remedial measures to address these problems. The department’s swift action aims to ensure that residents receive the services they are entitled to and to hold those responsible accountable.
