Former President Jacob Zuma’s efforts to initiate a private prosecution against President Cyril Ramaphosa suffered another setback, as the Supreme Court of Appeal (SCA) recently dismissed his latest appeal. This marks Zuma’s second unsuccessful attempt to challenge the High Court’s decision to annul his private prosecution summons issued to Ramaphosa in 2022. The charges pertained to alleged inaction on part of Ramaphosa regarding complaints against State advocate Billy Downer, the lead prosecutor in Zuma’s ongoing arms deal corruption case.
Last year, a full bench of the High Court in Johannesburg had initially reviewed and nullified the case. Despite previous rejections by both the High Court and the SCA, Zuma’s legal representative, advocate Dali Mpofu, disclosed that they plan to escalate the matter to the Constitutional Court.
The case was adjourned in a recent session and is scheduled to resume on February 6 next year. President Ramaphosa, who had been granted an exemption from appearing in person by the court, was absent from the proceedings. Meanwhile, Zuma attended the court session, accompanied by his daughter, Duduzile Zuma-Sambudla, and Mzwanele Manyi, a spokesperson for his foundation.
