Gauteng Education MEC Matome Chiloane has called on the bakkie driver who allegedly rear-ended a scholar transport vehicle in Carletonville to take responsibility for his involvement in the tragedy.
Gert van Emmenis is accused of culpable homicide following the death of 11 pupils in the accident.
The children and their driver lost their lives in July after their scholar transport was hit by van Emmenis’ bakkie, sending the taxi spiraling and eventually catching on fire.
On Thursday, 10 of the victims were laid to rest at the Fochville Cemetery after an emotional funeral service attended by at least 300 people.
Speaking on the sidelines of the funeral service, Chiloane said van Emmenis must be transparent and allow the law to take its course.
“So I don’t know how he believes that getting a top lawyer can get him out of this, where we are sitting, we are burying 10 kids and it’s sad that he is not showing any remorse.”
