The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has released the names of the family that perished in an accident near Marondera while coming from a graduation ceremony.
What started as a joyous and jubilant day ended in unfathomable tragedy for the Sithole family.
The Tragedy
The family, which lives in Morningside, Mutare, travelled to the capital on Wednesday, 7 August 2024, for the graduation of 28-year-old Jimmy Tinashe Sithole. The former Midlands State University (MSU) student was getting capped at the Harare Polytechnic.
The celebration and ceremony went well, and they departed for Mutare as dusk approached. On approaching the 53-kilometre peg along the Harare-Mutare highway, they crashed head-on with a Ford Ranger vehicle. Five people died in the gruesome accident.
The Police reported on the accident:
“The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) confirms a fatal road accident which occurred at the 53-kilometre peg along Harare-Mutare road on 7 August 2024 at around 1920hrs. Five people were killed, while four others were injured when a Ford Ranger vehicle with two passengers on board was involved in a head-on collision with a Honda Fit vehicle with five passengers on board.”
“The bodies of the victims were taken to Marondera Hospital mortuary for post-mortem whilst the injured are admitted at the same hospital.”

- Laquisha Sithole, a female juvenile of Morningside, Mutare.”

The Police implored motorists to avoid overtaking when it is unsafe to or in areas with poor visibility. They also urged drivers to observe speed limits and road regulations to prevent carnage.
