Moroadi Cholota, the former personal assistant to ex-Free State Premier Ace Magashule, is set to appear in a Bloemfontein court on Monday after being extradited from the United States.
Cholota faces charges of fraud, corruption, money laundering, and violating the Public Finance Management Act. Initially, she was a key witness in the R255 million asbestos tender corruption case involving her former employer. However, she was charged after refusing to cooperate with the State in the ongoing investigation.
Having been a student in the USA, Cholota resisted extradition for over three years before finally being brought back to South Africa.
Interpol South Africa’s spokesperson, Athlenda Mathe, highlighted the importance of international collaboration in securing Cholota’s return. “On the first of August, we received what we call a surrendering warrant, which is an order given for a fugitive to be sent back to the country where they are wanted. We were given seven days, and the national commissioner of the SAPS immediately assembled a team and deployed them to the USA. They were sent to the USA earlier this week, where they met with USA Marshalls for the handover.”
Cholota will remain in custody over the weekend and is scheduled for her first court appearance on Monday.
