A new theory suggests that ancient Egyptians used a hydraulic lift device to float heavy stones through the middle of Egypt’s oldest pyramid, the Step Pyramid of Pharaoh Djoser. According to the study published in PLOS One, a complex water treatment system would have enabled a water-powered elevator within the pyramid’s vertical shaft, thereby lifting the stones. The study points to ancient streams and rainfall, which would have been more prevalent at the time, to support the hydraulic system. However, there are debates over whether there was enough consistent rainfall to sustain such a system. Additionally, some experts remain skeptical of this new theory. Despite its innovation, they favor the widely accepted theory that ramps and haulage devices were used for the pyramid’s construction.
