The Democratic Alliance (DA) has raised serious concerns about the Department of Tourism’s director-general, Victor Tharage, following troubling allegations of bullying, manipulation, and abuse of power. These claims have reportedly led to the resignation of several senior staff members within the department.
In June, three directors took a decisive step by writing to the Office of the Public Protector, urging an investigation into Tharage’s alleged misconduct and failure to fulfill his duties. The DA has expressed deep concern over these accusations, which Tharage has denied, warning that they highlight a potentially toxic work environment.
“Tourism is a key pillar of our economy, and it thrives when employee morale and welfare are prioritized,” stated DA member of Parliament and spokesperson on Tourism, Haseena Ismail. “Written questions will be directed to Minister de Lille to clarify the situation in her department and assess the extent of these resignations. The minister must take these allegations seriously and initiate a thorough investigation into the director-general’s conduct.”
