Zimbabweans Express Outrage After Long-Distance Runner Rutendo Nyahora Drops Out of Paris Olympic Marathon
Zimbabwean long-distance runner Rutendo Nyahora has come under fire after she dropped out of the Paris Olympic marathon mid-race.
The 35-year-old runner withdrew from the race on Sunday after completing 22 kilometres of the 42-kilometre event.
This was her second Olympic appearance, following her debut at the 2016 Rio Games.
Retendo Reveals Why She Did Not Finish the Race
Speaking to a ZBC journalist after the race, Retendo revealed why she didn’t finish. She explained that she tapped out because it simply wasn’t her day. She emphasized that nothing specific caused her to drop out of the race.
“I couldn’t finish the race, but if I say anything happened, l will be lying. Nothing happened; it’s just that it was not my day today.”
She added that she intended to finish the race but couldn’t pinpoint what went wrong along the way.
“My aim was to finish even if I was to be last, but I don’t know what really happened.
“For now I want to rest. I don’t have any future plans, just want to rest,” said Nyahora as she broke down in tears.

Zimbos Express Outrage Over Rutendo Nyahora’s Withdrawal from Marathon
Rutendo Nyahora’s decision to drop out of the race has sparked outrage among Zimbabweans who were rooting for her. Many expressed disappointment over her failure to complete the race.
Critics argued that she should have at least completed the race instead of dropping out mid-race. Some even accused her of wasting state resources.
Here are some of the reactions;
@Mutangi Innocent;
After all the money pumped by tax payers to stay in hotels and knowingly that you will complete ONLY to tell 16million people that it was not your day. That’s rubbish and disrespect of highest order. While some nations are celebrating medals this is what our athletes are bringing home.
@Frank Hungwe;
She is not srs… results of corrupt selection processes … There are more srs athletes…who are not connected to the national sporting board.
@Takudzwa Chigwada;
So when is it going to be your day magwana here??? Such incompetent is unacceptable mhani
@Karakadzai Mukombe;
Very bad! Going all the way and not to finish a 42km race. We just wanted her to finish and she chose to stop mid race!!..She must pay back for all the expenses, that’s our tax.
@Richard Taruwona;
Poor athelete, it simply shows she has no passion.
