Gabon’s interim president, Gen Oligui Nguema, has implemented a ban on foreign holidays for government officials. Furthermore, he restricted the officials’ leave to a maximum of one week. This move comes mere days before the first anniversary of the coup that brought him to power. Last year, Nguema overthrew his cousin Ali Bongo, who had ruled the country since 2009. The new restrictions are seen as an attempt to contrast his leadership style with that of Bongo, who was criticized for frequent overseas trips. Ironically, Nguema allegedly owns several properties in the US. However, he refused to lend credence to the rumors when he was asked about them, instead asking that his private life be respected. Nevertheless, it is believed that the rules will also apply to him, especially since he is allegedly interested in contesting for next year’s presidential election.
