A group of alleged July unrest instigators will remain behind bars for at least one month, following another postponement in court on Friday.
Twenty of the 65 accused returned to the Durban Magistrates Court.
The group was arrested in provinces including KwaZulu-Natal, Gauteng and the Western Cape in 2021.
They’re accused of contributing to the deadly riots that robbed the economy of billions of rands and left over 300 people dead.
During court proceedings, some of the alleged instigators were told they had been denied legal aid.
The group is charged with conspiracy to commit public violence, incitement to commit public violence, terrorism, sedition, and conspiracy to commit murder among other charges.
They allegedly used social media posts to incite public violence, resulting in the looting of business premises.
“The case was remanded to the 26th of September 2024 for the accused to finalize their legal representation,” said KZN National Prosecuting Authority spokesperson, Natasha Ramkisson-Kara.
All 65 accused are expected in the dock when the matter resumes.
