240 incidents of electricity infrastructure vandalism cost at least R7 miliion to fix, says CoCT

The City of Cape Town says it has spent over R7 million to fix vandalized electricity infrastructure in a space of a few months,

According to the city, a total of 242 theft and vandalism incidents were reported between April and June 2024, amounting to an estimated cost of repairs of R7.3 million.

The metro said this is despite several interventions that it has put in place to fight the theft of electricity infrastructure.

Energy MMC Xanthea Limberg said streetlights and copper cables were some of the most vandalized, and sought-after items.

“Public lighting is an easy target due to easy access for criminals damaging the infrastructure to perform illegal activities. Again, Areas South, especially Mitchell’s Plain has been the most impacted with the 153, or 70% of the total incidents of 242 happening in this area.”
