President Cyril Ramaphosa has officially reassigned shareholder responsibility for various state-owned enterprises (SOEs) previously under the Department of Public Enterprises (DPE), which is set to be dissolved. The oversight of these enterprises has now been distributed to the relevant line-function ministries.
Eskom will be overseen by Electricity and Energy Minister Kgosientsho Ramokgopa, while South African Airways (SAA) and SA Express will fall under the jurisdiction of Transport Minister Barbara Creecy. Denel, the state-owned arms manufacturer, will be managed by Defence Minister Angie Motshekga.
Despite these changes, the DPE will continue to function for the time being. Vincent Magwenya, the spokesperson for the Presidency, explained that the DPE will remain operational until the transfer of its human and financial resources is completed. The Minister in The Presidency, responsible for planning, monitoring, and evaluation, has been appointed as the executive authority overseeing this transitional phase for the DPE.
This shift marks a significant restructuring in the management of South Africa’s key state-owned enterprises.
