Uyinene Mrwetyana’s mom says her daughter will always be remembered as a fighter

Uyinene Mrwetyana’s mother says her late daughter will always be remembered as a fighter.

Noma Mrwetyana was speaking on the sidelines of Saturday’s march in Cape Town, in memory of the 19-year-old who had been a student at the University of Cape Town (UCT).

Uyinene was brutally murdered by Post Office employee, Luyanda Botha while picking up her parcel from the Clareinch Post Office in 2019.

Her mother says Uyinene’s legacy lives on:

“The perpetrator confessed himself that she fought until she took her last breath. She despised social ills including gender-based violence.”

Meanwhile, UCT Professor, Elelwani Ramugondo is calling for more to be done to find and eradicate the root cause of gender-based violence.

“It’s time that we look at our systems, macro-economic systems. Everything, to say what would it take to bring about a safe South Africa.”
