ActionSA Demands Investigation into Justice Minister Thembi Simelane’s Alleged Conflict of Interest

ActionSA has lodged a formal complaint with the Public Protector against Justice Minister Thembi Simelane, following a report published by News24 and Daily Maverick. The report revealed that during her tenure as mayor of Polokwane, Simelane secured a loan exceeding half a million rand from a company that facilitated R349 million in municipal investments into VBS Mutual Bank.

Simelane has stated that her actions were entirely “above board.” However, ActionSA is calling for an urgent investigation by the Public Protector, focusing on a possible violation of the Executive Members’ Ethics Act.

Athol Trollip, leader of ActionSA’s parliamentary caucus, emphasized the seriousness of the allegations. He stated, “If there is any evidence that the minister received an illicit loan from the proceeds of VBS bank looting, she will be clearly conflicted in her role, and her appointment will be called into question.”

In addition, Trollip confirmed that the party has informed the president of their complaint. He urged all state departments to ensure that anyone involved in the VBS bank scandal, regardless of their political ties, is brought to justice.
