In a landmark achievement, a Zimbabwean-born politician, Councillor Mara Makunura from Chinhoyi, has been elected as the first female and first black African Mayor of Rushmoor Borough Council in the United Kingdom.

This marks a significant moment in the council’s history, reflecting a step towards greater diversity and representation in local leadership

Councillor Makunura’s New Role: From Deputy Mayor to Rushmoor’s First Black African and Female Mayor

According to The Herald, Mara Makunura, who was born and raised in Chinhoyi, Zimbabwe, will lead Rushmoor from this year through to the next. Prior to this role, she served as the deputy mayor of Rushmoor and has now been elevated to the position of full mayor.

In her acceptance speech at the annual meeting of the council, Cllr Makunura emphasized her commitment to championing diversity and promoting equal opportunities.

With our local census statistics evidencing that 52 percent of our Rushmoor population is female, it is crucial that our leadership reflects the diverse demographics of our community,” she said.

Councillor Mara Makunura expressed a strong commitment to breaking barriers and promoting inclusivity within Rushmoor Borough Council.

Together, we will shatter the glass ceiling and pave the way for a more inclusive and representative leadership that truly represents the beautiful tapestry of our community.”

Councillor Makunura’s Inspiring Journey from Zimbabwe to Political Trailblazer in the UK

Councillor Makunura’s journey began at Chikonohono Primary School and Nemakonde Secondary School in Zimbabwe. After getting married in 1996, she moved to the UK in 1997 to join her husband. Her political career in the UK started to gain momentum in 2018 when she became the first person of African descent to be elected as a councillor in Rushmoor, Hampshire.
