DR Congo Ceasefire Fails Amid Intensifying M23 Conflict

The ceasefire between Congolese forces and the M23 rebel group in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) has collapsed, with clashes intensifying near key areas between Lake Edward and Lake Kivu. The M23, backed by Rwanda, has captured significant territory, including the strategically important town of Kirumba, despite the ceasefire agreed upon in July. Rwanda is accused of supporting the M23 for economic and security interests, particularly in the resource-rich eastern DRC. The ongoing conflict has displaced 1.7 million people in North Kivu, adding to the 7.2 million already displaced by decades of violence. Meanwhile, the Southern African Development Community (SADC) has deployed troops to combat M23. However, the mission has struggled against the well-armed rebels.
